The Young Spinner Earns Unexpected Inclusion in England's Test Series Squad
England have opted for a twelve-player squad just two days ahead of the opening Test match, with the 22-year-old spinner earning a unexpected place.
The 22-year-old’s inclusion indicates that the visiting team will delay until the morning of the initial match to determine whether the venue pitch suit a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spinner.
Both pace bowlers are part of the selected group, indicating there are no concerns about their fast bowler's fitness.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the bowling group, with Carse expected to be omitted if Bashir makes the final team.
Ground Conditions Favor Seamers
The England coach had been expected to choose an all-seam attack on a venue that has hosted several previous Tests.
In those games, 134 wickets have been taken by pace bowling, with only 40 to spin.
Among these 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has taken the bulk, while all visiting spinners combined have only eight.
At a venue known for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, Isaac McDonald, stated that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a side loaded with seamers is still the probable choice.
Spin Options Considered
Previously there was speculation that the all-rounder could be brought into the side to offer some spin while additionally strengthening the batting lineup.
However McCullum has chosen to keep faith with the young spinner, having stated previously that he would be his preferred spinner for the series.
Earlier, Lyon described Bashir as “decent,” saying that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still the English top slow bowler.”
“This is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who haven’t done it in the past in Australian pitches,” Lyon remarked of spin bowling in matches Down Under.
“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so they come out and perform well out here.”
